Open liquid gears are for gears that are open in a housing and it is impractical and uneconomical to provide water-tight housing for them. These gears are usually larger than closed gears and move at a relatively low speed and therefore require a lubricant with a higher gravity.
These gears are partially lubricated at short intervals of time by the intermittent or continuous application of oil to the gears. The function of open gear oil is to prevent metal-to-metal contact, reduce friction, and protect the teeth against cavity corrosion, abrasion, and scratching. Open gear oils are often heavy oils, asphalt substrates, and soft greases.
In open gear applications, the grinder must resist scattering by centrifugal forces or tearing of the grinder layer by the action of the gear teeth, which therefore requires oil with high adhesion.

Depending on the service conditions and function of these oils, pressure additives and oxidation inhibitors are added to them. Great care should be taken when using open rib oils (adhesive agents), as the ribs of open oils absorb dirt and dust due to their adhesive capacity and these materials can act as adhesives.

In continuous gearing, a certain amount of gearing is continuously injected into the area of tooth contact or friction point. Continuous gearing is performed in the form of a compression system, an oil-floating system (immersion) and filtration. In compression system, an independent axle or pump is required to pull the oil from a tank and spray it on the gears.

In the oil filtration system, the oil is pulled from a tank by a gear part of which is floating in the oil, and in other directions the gears are pumped under boundary conditions.

Resistance to cracking: This property in oil prevents it from being wasted, especially at high temperatures, which leads to a decrease in gravity.

Resistance to brittleness (decay): The psychic must be resistant to brittleness, especially at very low temperatures.
